WIP: A little wednesday quilting

I am limited to straight line quilting on my machine. I have a Bernina Bernette which I love, but it was not meant for quilting. This is my first attempt at any quilting that has starts and stops within the quilt.

Can you see the quilting?

I am using a light grey on the top.

The back is a light blue thread. I wish I had a better photo, but the shadow actually helps you to see the quilting on the back. My pattern is showing up on the back because of the quilting! I am so excited.

There will be no close ups due to poor stitches, but you cant see them from this far away!!

I am starting to think about upgrading to a machine that I could free motion on. Anyone have any suggestions? I like the Bernina's with the free motion control but they are so expensive!!

Linking up with Freshly Pieced for WIP!

  1. I just did a piece with start and stops with my walking foot. Glad it was small. I am learning FMQ but need more practice. I thought you could do it on any machine--surprised you can't on your Bernina.

    1. well you can on the bernette, but mine is so basic that they don't make a free motion foot for it. I have to put a darning plate over the feet dogs and take the foot off. So it is a relative "can't"

  2. Hehe I can see the quilting but not the stitches - the texture is what's important! :) If you are looking for a good reliable quilting machine that is somewhere just below a high end machine I truly reccomend Juki. I have a Juki TL 2010 Q - it's a semi industrial machine that is intended for free motion quilting - extended bed, second tensioner, all metal, no computer, straight stitch machine with lever to drop feed, speed control, and stitches up to 1500 stitches per minute. (Do I sound like a salesperson? LOL Not affiliated, I just love mine!)

  3. Your stitching looks great! Starting and stopping in the middle of quilt adds that extra bit of trickiness, but it looks like you nailed it! I'm a huge fan of straight-line quilting, so it doesn't matter if your machine doesn't do other things :)
